Summer Show Report 2009

Society members and some non-members, produced a wide variety of flowers, shrubs and vegetables for the annual Summer Show; all of remarkably high standard considering the varied weather of another difficult season.  Unusually, this year there were no Gladioli ready in time but with a good number of entries in the remaining fifteen classes, and visitor numbers boosted to a new record by a Plymouth minibus, Meavy Parish Hall was a sea of colour and movement in the sunshine.

Brenda Burt, show secretary, was busy all day organising everything and ensuring the complex operation ran smoothly.  Martin Burt, Treasurer, greeted visitors, extracted their money and issued the voting slips, assisted at times by Nigel Courtier; Doris Potter ran the raffle; Society President, Cyril Spary, sold members plants, while Avril Back and helpers in the kitchen served tea and home-made cake in large amounts.

Several classes saw strong competition particularly, Hydrangeas, miniature flower arrangements, vegetables and a container of three varieties of growing herbs.

The visitors enjoyed the detailed study required of each entry, in order to choose their personal favourite in each class, while Tim Lambie collated all the votes on his laptop.

Joyce Williams the present chairman welcomed Ann Perry, for many years a staunch member and past chairman, who kindly presented the trophies.  Joint winners of the Gordon Cross Cup, for the highest placed overall entries, were Brenda Burt and Stephen Pine.

Brenda presented gifts to Ann and Tim, and Joyce thanked them and all those who had given their time, raffle prizes, plants and baking to make the show a success.  And thanks also to the many helpers, we had the hall cleared and tidy in an hour.
