Summer Show Report 2013

Saturday 10th August 2013

Meavy Garden Society held another successful Summer Show, with good quality entries, spread across sixteen classes for flowering shrubs, cut flowers, flower arrangements, herbs, pot plants, and vegetables.

Particularly pleasing were the large number of entries of Hydrangeas, cut flowers, and miniature arrangements.  Once again, Gladioli are late flowering this year and there were only two entries.

The vegetable and salad vegetable classes had a remarkable number and quality of entries, including a good corncob.

Thanks to support from Meavy School, the children’s class attracted twenty-four entries of a flowerpot, each with lively decorations.  Medals for the winners will be presented once school restarts in September.

Almost 100 visitors enjoyed the colourful displays, voted for the exhibit which in their individual opinion was the best in each class, bought raffle tickets or plants and enjoyed  the excellent cakes provided by the committee.

The task of collating the voting occupied Jenny Sharp, with her laptop, all afternoon to select the three winners in each class and the member with the most points in the show as winner of the Gordon Cross Trophy.

Dair Henderson was Guest of Honour, representing her late husband Douglas, both being active long-time supporters of the society.  She presented the trophies and cards for the three best from each class and graciously accepted the gift of a Myrtle bush from chairman Brenda Burt.
