Meavy Garden Society Programme for 2026
Meavy Garden Society was first formed in 1962 to “extend the knowledge of, and encourage interest in, the cultivation of flowers, plants and vegetables”, so this is the 64th year since its founding. We welcome all those interested in gardening, beginner or expert, from a wide area around Meavy.
Our meetings are usually on the third Monday in the month throughout the year, except for December and January. Meetings are in Meavy Parish Hall; the main meeting starts at 7:30 pm, but the hall is open for tea, coffee, biscuits and chat from 7 pm.
Annual membership is £20. At most meetings we have an outside speaker to give us their expertise on a wide variety of topics, with time for questions afterwards. We also have a few self-drive outings to ‘local’ gardens each year, usually in the Spring and Summer. Highlights of the year are the Spring Fun Show and the Summer Show (also fun!). The Society also contributes to Meavy Oak Fair, which is in June; members man and provide plants for a stall at the event.
Shows
The Spring Fun Show is where members display the results of their work over the winter in the garden, greenhouse and conservatory. This is in March. While a guest judge makes their decisions, members and visitors have a go at some light-hearted gardening-related quizzes. There is also a raffle plus homemade cakes, biscuits and other nibbles to go with the usual tea and coffee.
The Summer Show is in August. There are seventeen classes for cut flowers, shrubs, plants in pots and vegetables. Visitors to the show vote for their favourite in each class and members win points for first, second and third in each class on this basis. The member with the highest number of points wins The Gordon Cross Trophy, commemorating a past president of the Society. Exhibits are staged in the morning and the Show is open from 1-4 pm, with tea, coffee and cake.
